The femoral condyles and tibial plateau of the knee joint are replaced with smooth metal and highly cross-linked polyethylene plastic during a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or total knee replacement (TKR), a common orthopedic procedure. TKA seeks to enhance function and quality of life for people with end-stage osteoarthritis by minimizing pain. In developed nations, more TKA procedures are being performed on younger patients. As a shock absorber during surgery, at least one piece of polyethylene is positioned between the tibia and the femur. The prostheses are typically reinforced with cement, but in cases where bone growth is expected to serve as reinforcement, they may be left unreinforced. It is possible to replace or resurface the patella. The extensor mechanism is intended to be restored by patella reconstruction. The quadriceps may be split or spared during surgery, and the cruciate ligaments may be removed or left in place.
