Surgery's subspecialty of trauma surgery focuses on treating patients who have sustained physical injuries, frequently in an emergency situation. Not all trauma necessitates surgery and depending on the nature of the wound, these patients might also require additional care from neurologists, internal medicine doctors, and other medical professionals. Trauma surgery is most commonly used to treat injuries to the neck, chest, abdomen, and extremities. A variety of general surgical, thoracic, and vascular procedures must be understood by trauma surgeons. Blunt or penetrating are two ways to describe trauma-related conditions. ATV rollovers, assaults, falls, and injuries sustained in car crashes would all be considered blunt injuries. For example, stab wounds and gunshot wounds are examples of penetrating injuries. The patient in front of them is rapidly decompensating, and they are dealing with high acuity situations frequently with little time and incomplete information. The more common surgical interventions for trauma include exploratory laparotomies, in which the abdomen is opened and the abdominal organs are inspected for damage or illness. Both tracheostomies and thoracotomies involve the opening of the chest and the insertion of a breathing tube through the throat, respectively. More non-operative, and occasionally minimally invasive, treatment modalities have emerged as a result of developments in trauma and critical care over the past few decades. Less invasive therapies frequently produce better results, so this is advantageous for patients.
